He was Italian. He may have been Italian of Spanish, Portuguese or even Jewish decent as some modern revisionist suppose but those suppositions are thinly evidenced and rely mostly on conjecture. We do know that he and his contemporaries considered him Genoses Italian - who were and still are Italians. He was also a Catholic and if he secretly practiced Judaism he hid it extremely well. We have no reason to believe that he was mistaken about his own nationality any more then we might be mistaken about our own nationalities (but you never know).
