In the 4th century and during the early part of Constantine's reign, Christians were persecuted heavily by the Jews and other religions within the Roman Empire. Constantine changed this when he enforced an edict that made it legal to have freedom of religion and illegal to persecute someone for religion. He gained a lot of Christian allies and used this power to basically take over the church and make it the official church of the Roman empire. He needed the religion to fit better with the pagan populace so there were many forced adaptations to the doctrines of the Church. Because of this, over time several doctrines were altered to conform to Greek philosophy and pagan customs.
