In the US, pediatric Nurses, RNs or LPNs, with additional experience or certifications in care of infants and children, most often staff the nurseries of community hospitals and smaller acute care facilities in larger cities. But in tertiary hospitals (large and specialized hospitals, usually also associated with a medical school and medical research) with high risk newborn units ("nurseries"), which are called Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU), the professional nursing staff usually consists of highly specialized and trained Registered Nurses (RNs) with additional certifications and continuing education in the care of high risk newborns and are called Neonatal Nurses. Also at these specialty hospitals and units, often times there are RN Nurse Practitioners (NP) who can act in a capacity between that of a Doctor and an RN who does not have the additional training and licensure as a Nurse Practitioner.
The Licensed Professional Nurses (LPN, also called LVN in some states, Licensed Vocational Nurses) are sometimes on staff in NICU to perform practical duties which do not require a Registered Nurse, under the supervision of the RNs . There are Nurse Technicians (often student nurses) who provide specific care giving and record keeping functions to assist the other nursing staff under their supervision.
However, also at the tertiary neonatal facilities, there are many roles that are filled, not just the nurses. There are doctors, both Pediatricians and Neonatologists who, especially in the teaching facilities, are on staff and onsite in the NICU 24/7. These may include Residents, Interns, or (less frequently) fully board certified physician Neonatology Specialists.
Additional nursing staff may include the Certified Nurse's Aids (CNA), responsible for much of the routine patient hygienic care (although usually even this is a function of the licensed and registered nurses in a tertiary facility's NICU with the very high risk and very sick newborns).
Other ancillary staff assigned to duties in nurseries include housekeeping/cleaning staff, unit secretaries/unit clerks, ministers and clergy, Registered Dietitians/nutritionists (RD), Respiratory Therapists (RT), family counselors, social services workers (MSW), and, in some cases, Pediatric Pharmacists, Radiologists, and other very specialized staff.
It's not just babies but all children up to age 18. The field is known at Pediatrics, ie. Pediatric Nurse. A neonatal nurse will work only with new-borns.
A newborn nursery nurse would have to grow up, then do two years training to get NNEB qualifications. I'm not sure they are born to be nursery nurses but training is essential.
