Depending on the species of blackbird, and what folklore you are looking at, they can mean different things. They have been considered messengers of great change, speakers for the dead, and a warning of some kind. Blackbird is a pretty generic term.
The Romany (Gypsies) see crows as surrounded by mystery and exceptionally wise. To see one crow is a sign of coming sorrow, two means joy.
They also have a number of beliefs about rooks (another black bird). It is said it is fortunate to have a colony of rooks on your property, however if they should suddenly abandon their rookery disaster will follow. It is also supposed to be inviting misfortune to shoot a rook.
There is an old English rhyme about crows that goes something like this:
One is for bad news, two is for mirth.
Three is a wedding, four for a birth.
Five is for riches, six is a thief,
Seven a journey, eight is for grief.
Nine is a secret, ten is for sorrow,
Eleven is love and twelve is joy on the morrow.
