Palm trees can be dangerous if you touch them in the wrong spot. Sharp thorns on their branches, trunks and the undersides or tips of fronds can puncture the skin and cause bacterial or fungal infections. Puncture injuries may look harmless, but bits of thorny debris may lodge inside the wound. Infections are particularly likely if the debris carries fungal toxins or soil bacteria, such as Pantoea agglomerans. Inflammation of a palm tree puncture wound requires medical treatment.

The tip of the spike dries out and becomes brittle, when it penetrates your skin it can break up into lots of little pieces. They effectively become lots of mini splinters which your immune system tries to chew up, in the process causing a lot of inflammation and pain. Sometimes bacteria can be carried in on the spines which adds infection to the mix.
I really don't know the answer about "poisonous-ness" of palm tree spikes, but we have date palms in our back yard and when I get "bit" by one it starts being painful and stiff after about an hour. The pain and stiffness seems to last a day or two (or three) and subsides. It also appears that it causes subcutaneous bleeding and swelling at the "poke" site. Not sure what this all means except to be careful.
I'm no doctor. Just trying to help.
