1)the postulate of Dalton which says all atoms of same elements have same mass and properties isb wrong because there exists isotopes which are of same elements but have different masses and properties.

All elements are composed of tiny indivisible particles called atoms. These particles cannot be indivisible because atoms can broken down into protons. electrons and neutrons. Dalton also states that atoms of the same element are identical. This is false because elements have different isotopes and ions.

Dalton (1766 - 1844) gave chemistry a basis for understanding atoms and their combination that was almost a cornerstone of modern understanding.

Dalton proposed that

  • Compounds have a composition that is fixed ie The Law of Constant Composition. Example: water is always H2O, carbon dioxide is always CO2 etc. they don't vary their ratio of elements. This is still part of chemical understanding.
  • Matter consists of atoms that are indivisible in chemical reaction. This is still part of chemical understanding even though we know that atoms can be split in nuclear reactions.
  • Atoms cannot be created or destroyed. Basically true if we ignore nuclear reactions.
  • Atoms can be rearranged to create new chemicals. True - glucose, C6H12O6 burns in oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water.
  • Dalton's law of partial pressure of gases is still used.

However, he also suggested:

  • All atoms of an element are identical. This is basically true but we now know that isotopes of an element exist ie chlorine has 17 protons but ~75% of the atoms have 18 neutrons and ~25% have 20 neutrons in the nucleus. Makes no difference to their chemical properties.
  • the atoms to be spheres but did not propose any theory of what was in them.
  • that the rule of simplicity should be applied and unless otherwise confirmed by experiments then molecules were binary, for example he thought that water was a binary compound of OH.
  • some relative masses of the elements that are no longer considered accurate.
