aletter & number like (4h) is a light lead & a (6b) is a darker lead As used in shadowing. choose a pencil with light lead like a 4H. use this so if you don't like something you started drawing than you can erase it easier if you use a pencil like a 6b erasing this will show .

I start with a light lead pencil drawing lightly so when I get it to point that I can say yes this is right than I use a darker lead to bring it out. If you are trying to do light shadow work on your picture use the side of you pencil lead just scribbling back & fourth not hard but lightly now take your finger & rub it over the scribbling you will see it fill in. also get a good eraser. a spongy eraser is a bad eraser need a harder rubber eraser .

If you are just looking for a low priced standard graphite woodcased pencil that writes and draws smooth with little to no smudges I would recommend:

Dixon Ticonderoga Black (almost identical to a blackwing 602 if you ask me...)

Papermate Mirado Black Warrior

California Republic Palomino

If you are looking for higher standard (and higher price) drawing pencils you might try:

Derwent

Staedtler Mars

Beginning and average artists typcially find a range between 3H and 6B to be more than adequate for most projects. Capture what you see... There is no camera like your mind.

i do agree but 2B's can be good sometimes, all depends on what your drawing.

[From Dixonart: I would recommend Tombow Mono-Homograph pencils. They were known as Japanese animation pencils, but they really good quality for all kinds of graphite drawings.]

Pencils made by Staedtler, Berol and Faber-Castell are some of the best quality ones available. For general drawing a medium hardness is best: HB or F, perhaps a B if you like a lot of dark shading in your drawings. Keeping the point long and very sharp is always a good idea (I call this a "harpoon point") - this allows for very precise and delicate lines, but by using the sideof the long point you can shade in large areas quite quickly.

A colored pencil. DO NOT use a marker! A marker will not show texture! I suppose you could use a crayon but a colored pencil works the best. Happy coloring! :)

A regular #2 school type pencil lacks the amount of graphite that is in a typical drawing pencil. A higher level of graphite is necessary for longevity of the artwork and for contrast in the drawing.
