Actually even if you throw in students and retired docs it adds up to more than 22% If you take them out of the picture then it adds up to around 29%.

According to the Bureau of Labor statistics there were (2008) 348,000 employed as docs in the US. With AMA reporting 120,000 practicing medical members that would be over 34%. (sources above and below)
