The military is an organized fighting force. There are 5 branches the Army,Navy,Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Each one has a different job the Army is the largest branch handling ground assaults and some attack helicopters. The Navy controls the sea with their battleships, destroyers, anphibious …landing craft, battlecruisers, cruisers, frigates, and aircaft carriers, but they also have submarines, the Navy SEALS and some helicopters for rescue. The Marines are the smallest branch but the best trained, they specalize in anphibious landings but can do anything from flying F-18s and Cobra attack helicopters to commanding a battleship and doing joint operations with the Army. The Air Force are the leaders of everything that flies, like jet aircraft, all kinds of helicopters, recconnasince aircraft, weather data collecting planes, and radar jamming aircraft just to name a few.The Coast Guard does all the home guarding, if you get stuck in a hurricane and need rescue they`re the ones that will come save you,but they also do things with marine wildlife and helping out customs and border protection agency. They are the ones who check all the big cargo ships for drugs and illegals before they dock. All these are important to protecting us and neither one is more important than another so if you see someone in the military be sure to thank them for their service to our country.God Bless America! Ever since the Earth's human population developed into societies, there has been some type of military. It seems that groups just can't get along as we would like. There is always a bully that wants what you have. In order for you to keep what you have, you must be willing to fight for it. Sad but t…rue. The weak have always been preyed upon by those that thought they were stronger. Look at some of the wars and conflicts that are going on today around the world. Some countries that don't have any military have been abused, robbed, killed, enslaved by some other country who had the strength to take what they want. Countries that have the strength to stop them also have a moral obligation to help the weak. We also have a right to protect our own land and people. Because there is always a bully, there must always be a protector. If a bully attacks a weak country then they can only get braver and stronger, and it is just a matter or time before they try a larger country. If you see a friend being beaten, will you muster the strength within yourself and come to their aid? Or will you turn away and pretend it didn't happen? If someone bigger than you attacks you, will you lay down and give up? Or will you defend yourself? In a "perfect" world, we would not need to have militaries. Until then we need to be able to protect ourselves. We should be very proud of those who serve, to fight injustice and terrorism and to ensure our freedom. (MORE)
To get into the military it's as easy as walking down to your nearest recruiting station pick the branch you want to in and signing the papers saying you will fight to protect and endure the freedom of the United States. They will then tell you your Basic Training Date and when that time comes you w…ill go off to basic after 8 weeks (12 weeks for Marine Corps) then on your final day your Drill Sergeant will say WELCOME TO THE UNITED STATES "your branch here". This question can best be summed up by the oath of enlistment of the United States Army: I "state your name" do solemnly swear to support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America, against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Yes and no. Just to expand on my question a bit, I recentely came across a blog written by a guy in the US military. His picture showed him in full uniform and he states he is the Air Force reserve. My issue is he has some quite extreme religious views and for example calls gays 'perverts' , scientists 'stupid'… for believing in evolution, and comments on Muslims in Britain and Obama. I agree that everyone is entitled to their views but I don't think someone should be able to express views like this when representing the US military. Is he allowed to say things like this whilst dressed in uniform and represnting the military? (MORE)
No; that would be an awful lot of saluting and would cause a lot of confused civilians if you saluted everyone when walking down the street. But, at least in the Navy, the standard was to smile and return the salute if a civilian salutes you (as kids often do).

It works like an old-style pension, rather than a 401k. There's no explicit contributing to it. It's just part of the compensation that if you serve >=20 years and retire, you get retirement pay (which is a percentage of your last active-duty pay). Members of the military do have the option to cont…ribute to a Federal Thrift Savings Plan, which is just an Individual Retirement Account but with a higher yearly contribution limit (as with an IRA at a bank, contributions aren't taxed until withdrawal).
