12% is wildly inflated. Recent estimates show roughly 450,000 centenarians worldwide. With the world's population currently at over 6.8 billion, that would make the figure .006% or six thousandth of one percent.

That last answer is horribly wrong. The question is not "What percent of the population is over 100?" I don't know the answer, but do know the older you are, the greater the chance you'll make it to 100. :-)

It's quite implicit that the question deals with those 100 years old & above, not just those currently 100 & not any older..just wouldn't make any sense from a statistical standpoint. Unless my figure of current centenarians is off, my rough estimate of .006% stands.

there are about 475,000 centurions alive today. these people were born at or before 1913. in 1913 there were only1,650,000,000 people not the 7+ billion we have today so that is actualy (475,000)/(1,650,000,00)=.00028=.028%

This is one of those 'moving target' questions that have an answer that is constantly changing. Of course, in this case, the percentage is growing all the time.

Currently in the US, about 1 in 3,300 people live to be 100 years old. That translates to about 0.03%. France has a slightly higher percentage, and Japan a bit lower. But residents of Japanese Okinawa have FIVE TIMES the likelihood of other Japanese -- or Americans or French -- of living to 100. Studies are underway to determine why this is so.
