Petsmart may sell Ferrets on occasion, however, if you are considering adopting a Ferret, I would recommend that you adopt one from a breeder or other source rather than a pet store, as pet store Ferrets have an increased risk of illnesses

I would not buy a ferret from a pet store.

Ferrets from a reputable private breeder will be much better socialized with humans and other ferrets. They get to spend lots of time with their mother until they are ready to go.

Pet stores often get kits that have been taken prematurely from their mother, this can make the ferret more insecure. Also the pet store is unable to spend as much time with it as a breeder, and therefor the ferret might not be bite free or trained to use a litter box.

When you buy from a serious breeder you know they have the ferrets best in thought and is not just trying to sell as many as possible to make money. And if you live close by you can probably visit the kits when they are very young, which is just awesome.

I can only talk for where I come from (Europe, Norway, England, Germany). But when it comes to health private breeders are very concerned about making healthy ferrets and keep extensive track of genetics. It is not uncommon for a ferret from a breeder to outlive a pet store ferret, and have less age related problems like insulinoma or other cancers.

I'm not sure about all their stores, but my local one - which is huge - does not, although it does sell ferret food and various ferret accessories. If that one doesn't, I'd be surprised if any others do and their website suggests this is the case.

You cannot breed ferrets sold in pet stores in the US, as they are altered before being sold. Ferrets from a private breeder usually stipulate that you will have them altered at a certain age.
