If the Moon is in the southwestern sky at sunset, then you are in the northern hemisphere, and the Moon is in the waxing crescent phase. You can probably guess, within one day, how many days "old" the Moon is, in days after the new moon. If the Moon is straight south at sunset, then it was 7 days old at first quarter; if it was southwest, it was about 3-4 days past the new.

If the Sun is setting and the Moon is in the southeastern sky, then this is a waxing gibbous Moon - and you are in the northern hemisphere.

If you were in the Southern Hemisphere, you would see the Moon in the Northern sky, not the southern sky. (If you are in the Tropics - between 23.5 degrees north to 23.5 degrees south latitude - then the Moon will sometimes pass north of you and sometimes pass south of you. )

What time in the today in new zealand can you see the moon in the sky?

The Moon is in the "waxing gibbous" phase today, August 22, 2010, so the Moon will rise in mid-afternoon and be visible somewhat north of east at sunset.

Why do we not see the moon during full moon?

The only reasons why you wouldn't be able to see the full moon would be that either it is daytime (the full moon rises at sunset, and sets at sunrise), or it is during totality of a lunar eclipse, or your eyes are closed. The full moon is the brightest thing in the night sky. It's almost possible to read by it.

Does Inuyasha turn into a human in daylight?

InuYasha turns into a human on the night of the new moon (that means there's no moon in the sky).

Which planet is near the moon from earths view?

That varies on a week-to-week basis. Because neither the other planets nor the Moon are far from the ecliptic (the plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun), the Moon will often appear near one or another of the planets in the sky. Most people don't notice Mercury or Saturn; they are pretty small, and not all that bright. (Especially in our modern light-polluted skies.) But it isn't at all unusual to see the Moon next to Venus, or the Moon next to Jupiter. Tonight, for example, on June 14, 2010, the Moon is just "below" Venus in the evening sky just at sunset, and tomorrow, June 15, 2010, the Moon will appear to be just "above" Venus in the evening sky. Venus is QUITE bright, and tonight's Moon is the waxing crescent called "Diana's Bow", so it is quite lovely.

Do all people on Earth see the same phase of the moon within 24 hours Why or why not?

Yes because when its night over here its night all over half the world.Answer:Practically yes technically no. Two people, one on each side of the international date line , could see the moon simultaneously but on different days.=====Two people looking at the moon at the same instant of time, regardless of wherethey're located, as long as they can both see it in their sky, see the same shape.Note that it could just as well be daytime for one or both of them.

Which phase of the moon happens right after a third quarter moon?

The lunar cycle begins at the New Moon when the moon has just passed the sun in its travel from west to east in the "pm" sky, and it sets just after sunset. After a week the moon is a quarter of its way around the Earth and so at sunset it is high in the sky. This is called the First Quarter. The first Quarter Moon follows the sun from east to west and sets at midnight. When the moon has done half of its monthly journey, it is on the side of the Earth opposite the Sun and the Moon is Full. It rises at sunset and can be seen in the sky all night, setting at dawn. In the Third Quarter Phase, the moon is three quarters of the way around and at sunset it is directly below us. It has apparently shifted from the sunset area (at New Moon) to overhead at sunset (First Quarter) to Eastern horizon at sunset (Full Moon), to below us at sunset (Third Quarter). At Third Quarter, the Moon rises at midnight and will be high in the sky at sunrise. It will set about mid-day.

What is a waxing and waning crescent moon?

A waxing Moon can be seen when the Moon is larger in the sky, and is moving from the new Moon phase, and into the full Moon phase. A waning Moon is seen when the Moon is visibly smaller in the sky, and is moving from the full Moon phase, and into the new Moon phase.

What are facts about first quarter moons?

The First Quarter Moon is the phase of the Moon which is most easily spotted by the casual observer. You see the Moon in this phase in the south as the Sun sets. If the sky is clear at sunset, you can't miss the first quarter Moon. In this phase, the Moon sets at midnight. In a crystal clear sky, you can even see the first quarter Moon a few hours before sunset in the southeast.the cicle is new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning cresent, then new moon again and so on so a first quarter moon is when you can't seehalf the moon.

Why is the moon easier to see after sunset?

After sunset, the sky darkens, making it easier for our eyes to adjust to the darkness and see fainter objects like the moon. Additionally, as the sunlight fades, the contrast between the bright moon and the darkening sky increases, making the moon more visible.
