Only icicles grow in Minnesota, just kidding! There are too many things to list so if you just moved to MN most of the local nursery and greenhouses are going to only stock plants, trees and shrubs that grow in MN so if you buy from them your ok. Even the local Wal-Mart and Kmart are normally only going to have plants and trees that grow in MN. If you order online or from a seed catalog make sure what you get is hardy to zone 4 if you live in southern MN and zone 3 in northern MN. MN isn't too dry so drought is not normally a problem, it is cold and a short growing season that is the main factor in what you can grow.
Spring is normally the best time to plant in MN. Some parts of the country fall is often best to plant but because of the severe winter its best to let plants have some time to settle in before the winter hits. When I say spring; for cold tolerant plants like spinach and onions shortly after the snow melts. The last frost is normally in may but sometimes as late as June in the North, so you have to be careful planting vegetables or anything that can't take frost in the spring. Plant short season varieties especially in Northern MN or you can do like some do, plant stuff out in early may but watch for frost warnings on the news and cover your young plants with plastic or sheets to protect them from frost on cold nights.
