He represented the Democratic-Republican Party. He was actually the founder of the party. Jefferson created the party in opposition to the Federalist Party, that was founded by Alexander Hamilton. The Federalist Party was committed to a fiscally sound and nationalistic government. Jefferson by today's standards was neither a Republican or Democrat. Although he was a big proponent of state's rights, which would make him a natural ally of the Republican Party.
