The openings exceed the supply in both government and International business. It helps to have other skills at the same time, and technical terms in different fields demand hard training to master. A linguist is not someone who simply speaks a second language fluently or is simply bilingual. Subtle shifts in tone, volume and pitch in the the spoken word can often be misinterpreted. Syntax is essentential. Aussies insist that they speak English. so do Bostonians, Southerners and proper Englishmen. They do of course, but the differences are not subtle.

Language description is a work intensive endeavour usually requiring years of field work for the linguist to learn a language sufficiently well to write a reference grammar of it. The further task of language documentation requires the linguist to collect a substantial corpus of texts and recordings of sound and video in the language, and to arrange for its storage in accessible formats in open repositories where it may be of the best use for further research by other researchers. Many linguists work as translators.

I think most people who major in linguistics tend to go on to obtain higher degrees such as the MA or PhD because many people wish to either teach at the university level or wish to do research in a specific area of interest. However, you absolutely do not need more than a bachelor's degree to obtain a job you like. Positions for people with linguistics degrees are available in both the private and public sectors.
