Warren Gamaliel Harding (b. November 2, 1865) was a senator from Ohio who was elected the 29th President of the United States on November 2, 1920; his 55th birthday. Harding served from March 4, 1921, until his death on August 2, 1923. Here are some other interesting facts about Harding: 1. At the time of his death, Harding was the only incumbent senator to have been elected president. He was also the only one to have been survived by his father; presidents James K. Polk (in 1849) and James A. Garfield (in 1881) having been survived by their mothers. Subsequently, the only other incumbent senator elected president, John F. Kennedy, also became the only other one to have been survived by his father. (In fact, Kennedy, who at 43 was the youngest man to have been elected president, and who at 46 died at a younger age than any president, was also survived by both his mother and paternal grandmother, Mary Fitzgerald!) In 2008, America will elect an incumbent senator president. Both of Barack Obama's parents are deceased, but 72-year-old John McCain's mother is still alive! 2. Harding is the only president to have been born on the same day as one his predecessors. James K. Polk, who served as the 11th president from March 4, 1845 - March 4, 1849, was born on November 2, 1795. Considering that there have been 42 men to have served as president, this is pretty astounding. By contrast, 3 of the first 5 presidents died on July 4th (Thomas Jefferson and John Adams within hours of each other on July 4, 1826; James Monroe on July 4, 1831); while two (Millard Fillmore in 1874 and William Howard Taft in 1930) died on March 8, and two more (Harry S Truman in 1972 and Gerald R. Ford in 2006) died on December 26. 3. The man who succeeded Harding as the thirtieth president, Calvin Coolidge, is the only one to have been born on July 4th. While Harding was, at the time, the only president to have been survived by his father, Coolidge remains the only one to have been sworn into office by his. Coolidge was at home in Plymouth Notch, VT in the summer of 1923. At around 2:30am on the morning of August 2, 1923, he was awakened and told the news of president Harding's death in San Francisco. Coolidge's father, John Calvin Coolidge, Sr., was a Notary Public who administered the oath of office to his son, before both men went back to sleep.
