Charles Manson was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. Hi's mother had run away from home at the age of 15 and spent the next few decades drinking too much, with periods of time spent in jail. Since his mother couldn't take care of him, Charles spent his youth at the homes of various relatives and often at special reform schools and boys homes.

National Training School for Boys in Washington, D.C., Indianapolis juvenile center, Indiana School for Boys and Gibault School for Boys were some of the boys home he was put in his early life. Then he landed in jail several times before the killings including Natural Bridge Honor Camp, a minimum security institution, Federal Reformatory, Petersburg, Virginia, Federal Reformatory at Chillicothe, Ohio and Terminal Island, San Pedro, California.

Charles Manson is still being held in disciplinary custody in the California State Prison-Corcoran's Security Housing Unit .

Initially he was sent to San Quentin Prison just north of San Fransisco. The 3 young women who were tried with Manson were sent to the womens prison in Fontana, CA located in Southern California. All 4 of them (Manson, Susan Atkins, Leslie VanHouten, Patricia Krenwinkle) were given the death penalty. Then their sentenses were commuted to life in prison after the Supreme Court declared the death penalty unconstitutional. All 4 have come up for parole many times but they are always turned down.

This may not be a complete list as it's hard to find info that is decades old.

As a youngster Manson spent time in various youth facilities including:National Traning School for Boys in Wash. DC, Indianapolis School for Boys, Gibault School for Boys, Boys Town in Colorado, Natural Bridge Honor Camp, a minimum security facility, Federal Reformitory in Petersburg, VA. The Federal Reformitory at Chillicothe, Ohio, Terminal Island, in San Pedro, CA, Vacaville Prison in Vacaville CA, San Quentin, San Francisco, CA*, and where he is currently housed, Corcoran State Prison, Corcoran CA, in the Secure Housing section.

*Manson was sent to San Quentin after he received multiple death sentences for the Tate-LaBianca killings. San Quentin has California's only death chamber, all death sentence cases are sent here, just north of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. When the death penalty was struck down in 1972 (temporarily) Manson was transfered to Vacaville, located in Vacaville CA, about 50 miles west of Sacramento.

Charles was placed in a boys school since he was a boy. By 1952, Manson was soon spending more time in prison. In total he spent more than half his life (17 years) incarcerated. From 1958, Manson was in and out of jail for a variety of offenses including 'pimping' and passing stolen checks. During this time he had also raped a fellow male prisoner while brandishing a razor. Paradoxically, it was whilst he was incarcerated that he tapped into his creative talents and learnt how to read music and play the guitar. He was finally released on March 21, 1967. The first victims on the August 9, 1969 were guests at Roman Polanski's Beverley Hills home at 10050 Cielo Drive, that included Sharon Tate the film director's seven months pregnant wife. The following day Manson instigated another killing spree, this time at the home of wealthy couple Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary. Manson chose four of his most obedient comrades, Charles 'Tex' Watson, Susan Watkins, Patricia Krenwinkel and Linda Kasabian, to carry out these heinous crimes.Manson himself took no part in the actual killings, but directed his murderous disciples to the address and instructed them to kill everyone.
