You can demonstrate this problem quite easily by removing the peel from an orange in one or two pieces. If you try to lay it flat you'll find you have to make lots of cuts in it, and it still doesn't work well. If you draw a map like this, parts that should be connected are not. If you try to draw the map without the cuts, you end up with some parts not in the same proportions as others. That is why there are so many different projections, or ways of trying to do this. None of them are perfect.
