What causes generation gap between young people and old people?

The "generation gap" between parents and their children really refers to a lack of, or poor communication. It is worth noting that the generation gap doesn't always apply to all families. There are many families in which coummunication remains consistent and positive.
Most often I think it comes down to the parents and the children having different opinions and values, which by itself is not necessarily a problem. The problem arises when one feels it is necessary to make the other person(s) wrong because of their opinions, beliefs, behavior, etc..
If people can get past this obstacle and refrain from having to be "right" or make the other person "wrong" then communication can remain positive and bring the family closer. The willingness to allow others to have their point of view without making it a contest or a reason for arguing is what will make the biggest difference.

∙ 15y agoThe differences in things like technology, how our parents raised us, attitudes toward child raising that have changed, the difference in slang and language from one generation to the next, the inability of a young person to understand what it's like to be old, and the inability of an older person to understand what it's like to be young in your generation, many things.

* For the most part I feel that young people are truly making an effort in various ways to be wise enough to seek the wisdom from the older generation while the older adults should also realize that the younger generation have some good ideas and meshing the 'old with the new' can be very productive in every aspect of life. I believe from my own experiences that the gap is closing in all the time if both parties reach out and make an effort.

This post coming from an older generations opinion is the fact that wise older adults can often learn from the young and the young can learn from their wise elders. Sometimes the old and wise true methods of getting through life still apply to today's youth, but young people can make some of the older generation feel their youth yet once again and help the older generation to expand their idea on certain subjects and some of the younger generation can keep the older generation in the 'know' on many subjects. Both should respect each other. The older generation have a history that could be very interesting and valuable to the youth of today.
