They suddenly controlled a significantly larger empire. They had taken control of most of Canada and India, but didn't have armies and infrastructure in place to either control or exploit these distant places.

In addition to that, the war had been very expensive. The French and Indian War was just a small part of a much larger war- the Seven Years War. In Europe, the Seven Years War saw Britain and Prussia fighting against Russia, France and Austria (there were other smaller countries, but those were the big ones). Prussia did most of the fighting in Europe in Britain's place; in return, Britain not only paid for their side of the war, but also paid most of Prussia's, so Prussia's brilliant king-general, Frederick the Great, could focus on fighting and not worry about bills.

So Britain suddenly had to deal with a much larger empire while somehow paying off their debts from war.

After the French and Indian War (1754-63), Britain's American territory greatly expanded and Britain had to find means to pay off their war debt. There solution was to impose more taxes on the colonists, in order to collect revenues. In order to keep the Native Americans on their side and prevent any unnecessary violence between whites and Indians, Britain imposed the Proclamation Line of 1763 (which forbade any colonists from settling onto the new territory west of the Appalachian Mountains, and required any settlers already livign wes tof the mountains to move back east). With this newly-imposed restrictions and taxes, there was tensioned political, economic, and ideological realtions between Britain and North America. The American colonies were divided between Loyalists/Tories and Patriots/Whigs. Though the majority of colonists desired independence from the mother country, with some hesistation. Thus the main problems Britain faced in North America after 1763 were: maintaining their rule of their greatly-expanded territory, preventing violence among the whites and the Indians, paying off their war debt, and stopping an American Revolution by more strictly imposing their rule (in attempt to prevent colonists from gaining independence from Britain). ****Hope that answered your question. :)

How prepared were the American colonists to face the economic and military power of Great Britain when war broke out in 1775?

Even though victorious, the American Colonists were not very prepared to fight the British. The Americans were weakened by the outrageous taxes to Great Britain and more so the French and Indian War (1754-1763). Also being already established for a , Great Britain was an a lot bigger, stronger, and more economically stable then America at the time.
