See link below for many details. Among other problems, she had to deal with religious strife, the Spanish Armada, and pressure to continue the line of succession. She reigned over a golden age of cultural brilliance; Shakespeare, Marlowe and others are forever associated with the Elizabethan Era.

Queen Elilzabeth the first faced many dangers during her reign. Hailed as the virgin queen, she was subject to a number of assasination attempts by Catholic supporters and was even excommunicated by the Pope who was quoted as saying that "To kill the queen of England would not be a sin".

Mary Queen of Scots (a catholic who claimed to be the 'true' Queen of England ) imprisoned by Elizabeth in the Tower of London was eventually blamed for the assassination attempts. A number of coded messages calling for the death of Elizabeth was intercepted, allegedly having been sent by Mary. Eventually this lead to the beheading of Mary queen of Scots. This in turn eventually lead to the declaration of war by Spain and the Spanish Armada. Had the Armarda been sucessful then it is likely that Queen Elizabeth the First would have been executed and England subject to Spanish rule.

Having once been a favourite of Elizabeth, The ambitious Duke of Essex became disgruntled at what he claimed were conspirators in the palace who were lying to the Queen. With the some support he made an attempt to attack the palace in a coup d'etat. This was violently put down by the armed guard of the palace and lead to the arrest and subsequent beheading of the Duke.
