There was no discipline in the style of the European armies.

In the North, there was an easy-going democratic tradition that resisted 'blind obedience'. Also officers were often politicians in uniform, who needed the votes of the soldiers and their families.

In the South, there was a spirit of unchecked aggression, and some of the generals seemed to hate each other more than the enemy.

In combat, there was often a lot of friendly and humorous dialogue between the sides, which would have resulted in instant court-martial in Europe.
