it was used as a quarentine base camp. The European immigrents crossed the ocean from Europe. When they arived in British North America, they were checked out. If they were sick they would stay in the Grosse Ile camp until they gotbetter or died. This left a lot of children to be orphans because their parents were dead or in the camp. But the children got to keep their names. They were sent there so they wouldnt get healthy people sick too.

Grosse Île was the main entry to Canada for immigrants coming from the European countries. These immigrants came to start a life in the new land and we mostly from Ireland and Scotland. Grosse Île was also a resting point in where the immigrants could buy goods before leaving to other parts in Canada. However, later on, a terrible epidemic was set loose and this place was a insulator for those sick of it. This prevented any further spread of the terrible disease.

So basically Grosse Île was...

- resting place before moving on

- insulator for those who were sick

- main entry for Europeans coming to Canada
