Beowulf fights the monster Grendel to prove his strength and courage as a warrior, to gain glory and honor, and to protect the Danes from further attacks. He also sees it as a noble duty to rid the land of a dangerous and destructive threat.

∙ 14y agoBeowulf goes to fight Grendel to help the people of Herot, but more importantly to gain glory for himself. He intends to fight the beast with his bare hands, and he does, and wins by doing so. By the end of the story, this is in great contrast to his last battle, in which he fights in search of treasure instead of fame and honor.

∙ 14y agohe doesn't - he fights Grendel & Grendel's mother, a dragon, and he boasts that he has fought sea serpents. Those are the only mythical beings that he fights according to the actual tale.
