Answer
I am a convicted felon myself. You think it's hard with misdemeanors, try 10 felonies. But here's your best bet. CALL FIRST! Apartments (as I just found out) have insurance companies they use that have strict regulations. That is why it is so hard to find an apartment to accept ANY felony. But, there is good news my friend! Aim for individual owners. They are most likely to rent to felons and give us the second chance we deserve! Don't give up your search. As soon as I switched my focus from apartments and management companies, I immediately started finding individuals who were willing to give a well deserved break from the mutiny of hunting for a place. Same thing with evictions. Also, I should refer whoever reads this to www.craigslist.com. There are countless listings, and you are sure to find something in your area! GOOD LUCK, and remember, DON'T GIVE UP!!

If you are having that hard of a time of it, you can try your local Salvation Army- they may have contacts for housing. Also there are community resources that you may be able to access through your local DHS office (Where you go for food stamps and such. The name is different in every state).

Social service agencies in the town where you live may be the best resource for you to get your start in renting. Most cities and towns have ordinances against renting to convicted felons and so there are real limitations to finding a place to rent.

If you want find an apartment or a place to live, go fill out many applications--one of them will accept you. Just keep trying it. Normally that is a faster way to get lucky and find an apartment in such a big city.
That is how I did it since my wife had a misdemeanor and it was difficult for us to find one to rent. So how did we do it? We filled out many applications. I know there is a fee but make sure you have enough money for it. We filled out 33 applications and found out that 10 apartments would accept us.
P.S. Looking for an apartment is not easy but there are a bunch of them that that will accept you.
I'm married to a felon ad we are in the process of leasing an apartment. The best bet for people in our situation is to use an apartment locater service. They can help you get into a place that is decent and allows felons.
Answer
This is a broad, general question. Convicted felons don't automatically get denied apartments. Several factors affect the decision of apartment complex owners to rent an apartment to a convicted felon, including how recent conviction was, the type of conviction, and whether this person is required to be registered as a sex offender. Generally speaking, no sex offender is allowed to live in an apartment complex. There may be other rules including the proximity to a school, a park, and other places where children congregate; anyone recently convicted, that is usually within the past three to seven years, of a violent felony will often be denied an apartment. But usually nonviolent felons have no trouble getting an apartment.
But if you fit into any of the categories that make it difficult for you to get an apartment or other rental unit, you're going to need to just keep looking. Try to look for a detached unit (that is a single-family home) or duplex, and try to rent from an individual landlord as opposed to a commercial landlord such as an apartment complex. Do not state that you are convicted felon unless specifically asked. If you are convicted of a recent violent or drug-related felony you are not eligible for any federal subsidized programs such as section 8.
If you are having trouble renting an apartment because you are convicted felon try getting help from the local public defender's office or probation office (you don't necessarily have to be on probation): they may have more information for you.
