The German advance on Paris was stopped in September 1914 on the River Marne. By then the plan worked on painstakingly by the German General Staff was in tatters. Soon both sides extended their lines from Switzerland to the sea, and began about four years of trench warfare. On the Western Front the fighting turned into a war of attrition.
