By 1861, the British saw America as an economic rival, and were not at all displeased to see it divided.

The British government took a keen interest in the fortunes of the Confederates, and planned to send military aid as soon as they had established credibility by making a successful invasion of the North. When Lee started to invade Maryland after a string of victories, The British felt that the moment was near.

Lincoln was extremely worried about this prospect, and issued the Emancipation Proclamation, in order to turn the war into a crusade against slavery (which it hadn't been at the start), making it politically impossible for the British, who had long since abolished slavery, to look as though they were fighting for slavery.

Great Britain was deeply involved in the US Civil War. Britain helped the Confederacy by building warships for the Rebels and bought Southern cotton that slipped past the Union blockade. British politicians realized that the Confederacy was a defacto state in that it had a government, a constitution and a standing army. It sold rifles and other weapons to the South as well and entertained diplomats sent to London from the South. Even Gladstone bought Confederate bonds.

The impact of the American Civil wars to the English was that England did a lot of trade with southern America (cotton, Sugar, tobacco etc) and during the American Civil War the Confederates decided to stop anything coming into the south and anything going out. This meant the English couldn't trade with Southern America.

Britain remained neutral during the American Civil War, and traded with both the North and the South while the war was in progress. The Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865.
