When America's founding father discovered the great land of America, he started a whole system of trade. Many of the population of Europe heard of Columbus' expedition, and decided to go see for themselves, considering it was deemed safe for travel after the Mayflower expedition. This continued until it was unbearable to Native Indians. The Europeans saw great oppurtunity with exchanging items with the Natives and that huge trade system is called the Columbian Exchange. Items that were traded were; livestock, crops, people and even the diseases. The outcome was the Indians dying off of the disease and spoiled food items given from the Europeans.

Columbus believed that the world was smaller than it really is. By sailing west, he could reach the wealth of the Indies, the name that Europeans gave to the areas of Japan, China, Indonesia (Spice Islands) and India, and save much time and danger compared to the overland routes. The nation that could easily reach those areas would reap commercial benefits and increase the wealth (economy) of the nation. Columbus set sail with the idea of discovering such a sea route to the Indies. Thus, when he landed on San Salvador, he named the inhabitants Indios (Indians.) By discovering such a route, Columbus also hoped to get rich. He would either be rewarded by the King and Queen of Spain, or he would become wealthy by business dealings with the people he discovered. Besides trade items (spices, drugs, foods, cloth, etc.), Columbus and his crew expected to discover gold and silver. Columbus did not set out to discover a New World. He set out with a desire to expand the knowledge of the known sea and sea trade routes, to discover the riches of the Indies, to reap commercial success for Spain, and to increase his own wealth and the future prosperity of his family.

Columbus led the wave of European dominance in the Americas, which destroyed the existing civilizations in favor of colonialism. This eventually produced European-based nations in nearly the entire Western Hemisphere.

The expeditions of Christopher Columbus and others became an exploitation of the lands, and the treasures that had been painstakingly accumulated by the native people. Rather than trade with the Far East, their original aim, they sought to colonize the Americas by force, subjugating the tribes and civilizations they found. There was at the time no moral imperative against this (it was repeated in Africa more than 300 years later). In addition, the explorers introduced diseases that the "Indians" had no immunity to, leading to terrible plagues. In the Caribbean, the Taino and others rebelled against the conquistadors, and set the stage for the introduction of African slaves into the New World.

Christopher Columbus was not the first person to sail to the Americas, but he is credited with discovering the new continents while exploring for Spain. It was his reports that lead to the conquest and settling of the Americas by the European. Since previous contacts with America did not have such profound effects, Columbus is considered by many to have had one of the most important roles in exploring the Americas.
