A huge one. Depending on your view, it was either he or James Madison who was the most powerful man after Washington. Even if Hamilton was after Madison in power he still wielded a huge influence as Secretary of the Treasury. Washington agreed with his polices, signed them, and for the most part agreed with what Hamilton had to say. When it came to the arguments he had with Thomas Jefferson, Washington normally sided with him. And Washington consulted him on a lot of matters, and took his advice.
