Fighting in the war or help around

"Free Blacks" who served under Gen. Washington were allowed to "take up arms" right away; and many did however Gen. Washington was against those "Enslaved Blacks" serving and taking up arms for fear many would turn against their Masters.

George Washington soon changed his tune after Lord Dunmore issued his proclaimation to free those enslaved blacks who chose to take up arms against the Americans.

Washington issued his counter-proclaimation to those enslaved who chose to fight with the Americans; and many did. They served as spies, war fighters, drummers, cooks, sailors, with very few officers..

Of the nearly 9000 who served under Washington, both Free and enslaved men were given land bounties. Of the my four free-born black ancestors who served, 3 rec'd 100 acres each for their service, and one rec'd 250 acres.

After the War, enslaved blacks were granted their freedom, as promised, along with 25 - 100 acres. Unfortunately the proclaimation did not secure the release of their mates and children who remained in bondage.
