They bring up lesser known issues which helps the government address things that would usually be overlooked.

Occasionally, a third party proposes an idea that sits well with voters, gaining them more support. When this occurs the major parties simply adopt this 'idea' into their ideology meaning that the third party potentially disintegrates.

Since the founding of our constitution, a third party candidate has never won the presidency. The only time a "third party" won the Presidency, was when the Republicans won it in 1860 as they were considered a thirdy party. The main purpose of a 3rd party candidate is to bring light to certain issues that the Republicans and Democrats do not emphasize on.

How do minor parties play the spoiler role in elections?

Minor and Third parties play roles as spoiler by taking votes from a major candidate. If a third party member leans towards the republican party, then s/he may take votes from independents and moderates that may have otherwise voted for the republican candidate. This will result in the democratic candidate having a better chance of winning because votes for the republican party were split.
