The two most important forms of RNA are messenger RNA (mRNA) and transfer RNA (tRNA). Both of these are important in the use of genetic information coded in the DNA for the production of proteins.

In eukaryotic cells, DNA is enclosed and protected by the nucleus to avoid genetic mutation. mRNA is created as a copy of the genetic data from the DNA in a process called transcription, but unlike DNA, mRNA can leave the nucleus. Outside the nucleus, mRNA is used as the blueprint for protein synthesis in a process called translation.

tRNA are small segments of RNA attached to amino acids (the building blocks of proteins). During translation, a ribosome reads the data from mRNA and puts together amino acids from tRNA into the correct sequence for the creation of a protein.

RNA plays a HUGE role in cell life! You see, DNA is the code for all life. In every cell in your body, you have a nucleus that contains DNA. This DNA contains the code to make another YOU! Everything your body needs to do to survive is on this code. So, how does your body use it and read it?

In the nucleus, there are proteins called "transcriptase proteins". You can think of these as little machines. And, as their name implies, all they do is transcribe. They run down the length of the DNA, and make an exact copy of it. But, they don't want to make a copy of the whole thing! That would take forever, and not serve much purpose. They are copying the genes that they need right now. They are starting and stopping at specific points along the DNA, and copying just a small segment. So, how do these copies of DNA get put to use?

The short, segmented copies of the DNA are in the form of RNA (ribonucleic acid). The RNA gets processed before leaving the nucleus, with a head cap and a tail put on (so it doesnt get broken apart before it does its duty). The RNA leaves the nucleus of the cell, where it is found by a ribosome. This ribosome does what is called "translation." It reads the RNA code and make a protein based on the specific instructions found on the RNA. Proteins are what virtually all of the machinery, enzymes, and useful parts of the cells are made out of.

So you see, RNA is crucial to get the DNA code out into the cell so it can actually be used. It is the messenger that connects the boss with the workers.
