The Pilgrims founded Plymouth colony. They left England. They were a Congregational Church and founded a Congregational Government. They agreed to live under laws they themselves made.
The Puritans were Presbyterians. They believed in representative government. They settled in Massachusetts. It changed to Congregationalist. The colony then changed to congregationalist or direct democracy. At that point it put in town meetings.
Roger Williams was a Baptist. He believed in total separation of Church and State. He founded Rhode Island.
Connecticut was also founded by Presbyterians and had its government set up on a presbyterian model. It had representative government.
As always, religion had its part in the change in English government. Disputes over religion essentially overrode the importance of the hereditary monarch. Distrust of Charles I's closeness to Catholicism coupled with the rise of reform-minded Puritans caused the deadlock that turned into English civil war. At various times in the conflict, each side was affected by religion. Charles's attempts to force Anglicanism on Scotland caused him to turn back to Parliament; the attempts of Parliament to change Anglicanism made public sympathy swing towards the king. English antipathy to Irish Catholics took Parliament and the king to the line that led to war. During the commonwealth, Cromwell enforced the rigid Puritanism that made English citizens receptive to the return of monarchy. When James II, a Catholic, came to the throne, England took steps to remove him in what became known as the Glorious Revolution. The Revolution allowed the Parliament to remove the possibility of future Catholic rulers, but also allowed them to make the changes that turned England into the model limited constitutional monarchy.
