To become a veterinarian you must first go to a four year college and get a degree. It's best to go to a college with a pre-veterinary program to get your degree but you can take the necessary classes other places as well, so to get your bachelors degree there are very many colleges you can go to. After you graduate with your degree you take a test and the students with the best grades, the best scores on the test, and the best extra-curriculars and work experience get admitted into veterinary school. There are 28 veterinary schools in the United States and after completing another four years at one of them, you graduate again with the degree to perform veterinary medicine. Getting into one of the 28 veterinary schools is difficult because there is a lot of competition. It is even more difficult than getting into medical school so it's important to work hard and be involved as much as possible!

Classes that have something to do with science are always your best bet. Biology and Life Science are great classes for this. Unfortunatlly, most schools don't have a riding team for you to get experience with horses in that area! There isn't much in high school to prepare for that career. Find a school you want to attend and then take the required classes for admission into that school along with some advanced science courses.
