He didn't go to school as a young boy. Somebody, probably his parents , taught him to read and write and do basic math. When he was in his late teens he studied with teachers in two private schools for two years and was able to get into the university of North Carolina with sophomore standing. The second school was at Murfreesboro, TN and was more advanced than a high school of today.
