He didn't go to school as a young boy. Somebody, probably his parents , taught him to read and write and do basic math. When he was in his late teens he studied with teachers in two private schools for two years and was able to get into the university of North Carolina with sophomore standing. The second school was at Murfreesboro, TN and was more advanced than a high school of today.

∙ 10y agoPolk got his AB degree from North Carolina University in 1818. He received a classical education- concentrating on Latin,Greek and Philosophy with some Mathematics and Science. Math was reportedly his best subject. He gave the Latin address at graduation and enjoyed debate and public speaking. He went on to study law with a lawyer.
