Svante Arrhenius (1859-1927) in 1896 was a Swedish scientist who developed what is now know as the 'greenhouse gas law':

"if the quantity of carbonic acid increases in geometric progression, the augmentation of the temperature will increase nearly in arithmetic progression"

The first serious research conducted on the effect of changes in CO2 levels was in 1896, when Arrhenius completed a laborious numerical computation which suggested that cutting the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere by half could lower the temperature in Europe some 4-5°C (roughly 7-9°F) - that is, to an ice age level. Arrhenius made a calculation for doubling the CO2 in the atmosphere, and estimated it would raise the Earth's temperature some 5-6°C (averaged over all zones of latitude). His calculations did not take into account the effect of the oceans in ameliorating the effect of rising carbon dioxide levels, and in any case Arrhenius and other researchers were only interested in explaining the Ice Ages. No one seriously believed that global warming was coming. After much criticism, the work of Arrhenius was ignored by the scientific community.

It was not until the 1970s that scientists began to take the possibility of global warming seriously and began to accept at least the principles of Arrhenius' research.

We don't know who first used the term.

Joseph Fourier, a French scientist, first suggested (in the 1850s) that heat was being kept in the atmosphere. We now know this as the greenhouse effect.

In 1896 a Swedish scientist, Svante Arrhenius, calculated that the doubling of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would cause a rise in temperature of 5-6° Celsius.

Many scientists around that time would have used the term "global warming" because it is a generic name. It means what it says, that the earth is warming globally, that is, all over.

("Greenhouse effect" is not a generic term. This has to be explained the first time someone hears it.)

Why does global warming decrease temperatures?

True global warming does not decrease temperatures. So, either the model for global warming's effects is hokus-pokus, or global warming as presently claimed, does not exist. Some global warming followers will have you believe that global warming makes the weather "act crazy". If true, then it is not really global warming, is it.

Is global warming a pollution?

Global warming in itself isn't pollution - global warming is the gradual warming of the earth. However, global warming was caused by carbon dioxide pollution in the atmosphere, but global warming in itself isn't a pollution. yes it is a pollution
