You should include a sincere thank you for the person's sympathy and generosity, but DO NOT mention the amount of money that was donated. The note should be kept short unless the donation was something out of the ordinary (e.g., vigil at hospital, caring for the deceased while sick, etc.). Giving of one's time should always be acknowledged.
