That depends on where you live. Where I am, we have been having temperatures well below freezing. So, now, we are taking down the greenhouse, wrapping up the hoses and digging up the last of our onions and radishes. We are also preparing our tools for storage.

Mid may is the ideal time to plant a garden with a variety of vegetation choices. However; late August should be a time when you can enjoy the fruits of your labor . Starting a garden this late in the year would cost you your time in labor, both in the planting phase and the removal of dead vegetation come winter.
it depends if the 12 year old is having a hard time doing there homework or just might start skipping there home work and saying that there doing it then they should do somewhere u can see them. But if there capable of doing things on there own and is generally independent then they should do it in their room
Why not start off with doing part time jobs for your neighbours (With your parents permission) I used to garden, clean windoes and cars and clean garages for mine.
