You can purchase a magnet on a telescoping wand that mechanics use to grab tools that have been lost. This MAYbe of some help trying to locate the run-away chain.Usually the p-trap under a tub is located directly below the overflow plate. Remove the two screws and try to fish a magnet down the pipe. The pipe and overflow plate are likely to be covered with soap scum and other stuff but it won't hurt you if you wash your hands afterward. If you can't get the chain using that method, you may have to resort to pulling the p-trap. Most tubs have an access door on the wall behind the overflow. It is often in another room. Before removing the p-trap, make sure that you have the supplies that you think you will need, including a new gasket, perhaps some "pipe dope" and you may even need to go so far as to get a new p-trap and fittings. A note of caution here,if the p-trap hasn't been removed for quite a while it would definitely be a good idea to replace the gasket when you take it apart. Also, sometimes p-traps have rusted over time and putting a wrench to the p-trap can cause them to completely crumble.Depending on what happens when you take the p-trap apart, you may be able to clean out the trap, find your wandering chain and put it all together without making an additonal trip to the local home improvement store... but probably not. Like anything else, there can be many potential "opportunities" to learn more about Plumbing when you take on a project like this.
