When your car goes into a skid, turn into the skid and pump the brakes (unless the vehicle has ABS brakes, in which case just hold the brake pedal down and let the computer do the pumping). Turning against a skid is likely to cause you to start a hard spin (3600 or more) which leads to total disorientation and often panic. Jamming your foot on the brakes can cause you to lose any friction you have with the ground rather than allowing partial braking. There are automotive schools that teach emergency procedures and these are very good places to hone your skills and become a safer driver.

plus if your car starts to go towards the ditch dont crank your wheel or lock your brakes put the car into nuetral and steer where you want to go because cranking it will shove your back end into the ditch

The first thing you should do is CALM DOWN. The majority of crashes that occur on highways are due to over steering skids due to over reactions. It is important to stay calm, cool, and collected so you may make rational decisions.

The next step would be to take your foot off the accelerator. You don't want to add fuel to the fire (the fuel being speed). This does not mean however, to slam on the brakes. That will result in the skid being much larger then it originally would be.

Both of your hands should be on the wheel in a "10 o'clock, 2 o'clock" position (imagine a clock). Keep a firm grip on on the wheel and gently turn in the direction you wish to go.

This next part is crucial: If you feel the back end of the car start slipping, turn the wheel towards it. This will allow the car to auto-correct itself and you to regain control.

Hopefully you will never have to experience a crash, and there are measures that you can take to prevent skids. Such as, during bad weather (rain, snow, ect.) slow down, especially around turns. As well as constantly checking and up-keeping your automobile.
