YO German Shepherds are a large breed dog. If fed a diet that is too rich for their stage of development they may develop panosteitis (wandering leg lameness, also known as growing pains). At about six months of age, Shepherd puppies should be switched from a growth formula (puppy food) to a quality adult diet unless a vet says otherwise. Feed the highest quality of dog food you can afford. Start out by feeding the amount recommended on the food bag for your puppy's weight. If your puppy puts on too much weight, cut back a little. If he gets too thin, increase the amount. Each puppy is different. So there is no one set amount that will work for all puppies.

Your veterinarian can advise you on how well your puppy is developing. You should be visiting him regularly for the puppy vaccination series up through four months of age. Other contributors have said:

• It may sound wrong, but some of the most expensive dog foods' main ingredients are ground yellow corn or chicken by-products. Most vets recommend two or more feedings a day for better digestion.
• Young dogs should not need a vitamin supplement if their dry food is decent.
• If your dog does not eat for the first couple of days after changing food, don't give in and add table scraps or anything like that. When he's hungry, he will eat.
• I would talk to the people at your pet food store. They can recommend a nutritious brand according to your budget. I tell people to buy the best they can afford. I choose Nutro Natural Choice, it works out to $1 a day for my very large dog and the food is fit for human consumption! Don't feel guilty for buying a "cheaper" food. Just love your dog and make sure to have regular vet visits.
• If you can't afford the food, I'm curious how you can afford the Vet. How can you afford the dog? A 40 dollar bag of food lasts mine a month, but I've got to tell you that we spend about 150 a month on average, including training, licenses, vet bills, flea tick worm medication, treats, food, and toys. And I have a healthy dog. You have a puppy, what you feed it now makes a huge impression on his health in the future.
• I would try Canidae for the quality of food you are not paying as much as you think. Also Solid Gold is a good one. I would stay away from Grocery store brand foods just because of what they put in them. Fromm and Taste of the Wild are reasonably priced along with Eagle Pack. Stay away from dog food with by-products, corn, wheat, soy, and dye's!

Contact a veterinarian, you can get powdered milk from them containing colostrum. This will be the nearest to the mothers milk, for the puppy to survive. They will also give you alot of information, on how many times to feed, and how much.
