There are a few things to avoid in cover letters, and various authorities assign different levels of importance to them. But some common guidelines include:

  • Don't address it "To Whom It May Concern" (personalization to the recipient shows your desire for that particular position)
  • Don't leave out your contact information from the cover letter.
  • Don't use a template (you probably want your own letter to stand out from the rest)
  • Don't write too long an introduction (your abilities should be stated concisely and without exaggeration)
  • Avoid fancy fonts or writing styles.
  • Avoid cliches, slang, and excessive jargon.
  • Avoid spelling, grammar, or typographic errors (have someone qualified who can proofread it for these mistakes)
  • Don't leave out your specific qualifications for the job (but you can omit your gender, race, and/or marital status - these should not be considered)
  • but Don't excessively repeat the information already in your resume.
