black tie events are generally very formal, unless you are attending something like a creative black tie event in which case you have more options as to how "exotic" your attire may be. it also varies slightly between countries, usually though men are required to wear either a tuxedo or some sort of dark formal jacket (short to medium in length) as well as dark pants. a white dress shirt is required for men as well as a tie or bowtie. for women, black tie events mean formality as well--this includes conservative cocktail dresses, floor length gowns or dressy ensembles of skirts and pretty shirts. formal shoes are required for both men and women, generally women have more freedom when it comes to this but in either case flip-flops are not permitted. finally, women should be aware of their accessories as well as if bra straps are showing etc. it is also a good time to get your hair done or do it differently than normal and if you are wearing open toed shoes pedicures are recommended. hope that helps..!
