I use the bagged, blue roller-ring vacuum that uses a hose into the skimmer drain with a reverse suction--and at least with my system and pump/filter, I set the filter to WASTE--it bypasses the DE filters. There's lots of lost waste water, moreso than even backwashing, so I do it sparingly.

Leave your filter on the setting "Filter",when you go to vacuum your pool, you need to shut the your pump off,via the timer, there will be a handle where either next to the pump or next to the filter where you will see on the PVC pipes marked "skimmer" and "main drain" or "pool drain" turn the handle towards the main drain or pool drain and this will shut off your drain at the bottom of the pool, thus creating more suction in your skimmer which makes it easier to vacuum your pool out!

** First ans. not a very good explaination by an inexperienced homeowner...

Second ans. hum..... how are you going to vac the pool with the pump off? You did not tell us to trun on the pump again once you "hooked" things up. Both are a waste of water. Not all pools are set up explaining or identifying pipes or valve and what they control.

Leave the back wash valve or sometimes called the rotor valve in the "filter" position because what you are going to vac is minor stuff not debris. You want the filter to filter out the dirt before returning it to the pool. Once you have vaced the pool then determine if you need to back wash the filter and do so if needed or wait until the gage on the filter tells you that the filter is getting dirty with higher readings on the gage.

The setting of the sand filter should be on filter for a normal vacuum. However if you are getting rid of the results of using clarifier from the bottom of the pool you would be beter of vacuuming to waste.

You leave your pool filter set to filter hook up hose with a vacume attachment vacume with filter set to filter or to and then backwash you filter if you have a sand type filter you can also vacume while filter is set to waste but you will need to add water when done. If you have a cartridge type vacume set at filter then remove filter cartridge and clean or replace.

Do you mean how high above the pool? If that is the case most pumps can self prime up to 10 feet above the water level. That said, the closer to the water level the better as it's easier on the equipment.

Just keep the setting on filter you may find that the preasure increases and if it does just give it a quick backwash to reduce it if needed.

For the first cleaning in spring set it to "waste" while vacuuming. Subsequently you can leave it on "filter" when vacuuming.

How is an above ground pool pump different from an in ground pool pump?

In simplest terms, an above ground pool pump is a flooded suction pump, which means the water level must be higher than the pump for it to operate, and an inground pump has the ability to draw water up from a level lower than the pump. The engineering and structure of these two different types of pumps is what makes them work the way they do. This means that, in a typical installation, you could use an inground-specific pump on an above ground pool, but not an above ground pump on an inground pool with the water level below the pump.
