Red Feathers sybolize physical vitality, good fortune and life. This is the basic symbolism I could find. Now I'm not neccessarily trusting the source of this answer.
In Native American culture the overall symbolism is derived through how the feather came into your possession. Ie) found it, a bird left it for you, you pulled it from a bird.
So it depends on the type of bird, how you got it, whether it was in a dream or awake etc.
Warbonnets (or war bonnets) are the impressive feather headdresses commonly seen in Western movies and TV shows. Each feather had to be earned by an act of bravery. Sometimes a feather might be painted with red dye to commemorate a particular deed. Both men and women wore headbands, which were not associated with war. The number and type of feather did not usually have special symbolic meaning, though in a few tribes that bordered the Plains eagle feathers were reserved for warriors. For the most part, Woodland Indian head bands were worn for their beauty, and were often decorated with intricate patterns, wampum, beads, and quillwork. The gustoweh cap is a formal feathered skullcap used only by men from the Iroquois tribes. The big eagle feathers on top of the cap were symbols that showed which specific tribe an Iroquois man belonged to. They used all sorts of feathers, but eagle feathers were used a lot because Eagles and their feathers are considered sacred. They represent honesty, truth, majesty, strength, courage, wisdom, power and freedom. As they roam the sky, they are believed to have a special connection to God.
what significance do turkey feathers have in Native American spirituality?
An eagle feather would represent how many corps they have done to an enemy.
How many times they have touched the enemy without the enemy hurting or killing them.
In order to block the glare from the sun on the Plains, American Indians would wear a feather held with a headband and would position the feather as a sunshade. When not being used it was just stuck up on the back of their heads as seen in many photos.

They are purely decoration, they work OK without them, it's the net and feathers that do the work, the net catches the dreams then they slide down the feathers to the recipient, which is why they are over the sleeping persons head...
-Do you mean "natives"? And if you did, it depended on their tribe on what and how they would dress like. They were mostly tan, with tribal paints and/or accessories with feathers and other things such as beads, furs, etc.
