Most owls have a "hoot" sound.

Most owls say "whooo whooo."

Tawny owls screech and barn owls Hoot.

If your in the UK and you hear a "kee wick" sound then it's a tawny owl. If it's the standard "hoot" then it's a barn owl.

Since most owls are nocturnal (meaning they come out at night and sleep during the day), seeing one usually means you have stayed up too late or the owl is up too early. It is still an exciting experience, especially to see one of those huge snowy owls, which are not nocturnal.

On the other hand, hearing an owl and its haunting hoo-hoo at dusk is not so unusual in hunting camps and during wilderness camping, but makes you wish all the more to see it...which you probably will not.

As for preternatural or supernatural meaning to seeing an owl, it probably means you have watched too many Harry Potter movies, but could also be connected to a loved one, living or deceased. Only you can determine that.
