A seahawk is an Osprey. However, THE Seahawk for the Seattle Seahawks football team is not an Osprey. It is an Augur Hawk (Buteo Hawk). Its name is "Taima" which means "thunder".
I have heard that the Seattle Seahawks had been named after the actual seahawk. The Seahawks are the ONLY National Football League team in the entire nation to have a live mascot!

Why shouldn't they? Endangered species are often native and only live in very selective areas, such as a single country, state or even valley. Having one as your mascot shows your pride for what is special, what is your own, and raises awareness for that species as well.
The armadillo that was chosen for the mascot for the FIFA 2014 World Cup is a Brazilian three-banded armadillo. This species is native to Brazil and is on the vulnerable species list. It was felt that this mascot would help send a message to people around the world that we all need to be concerned about the environment.
Stanfod doesn't have a mascot. Stanford's mascot is the Stanford Cardinal, but instead of an actual bird it is a pine tree. As a proud alum of Stanford im still not entirely sure of the meaning of the Cardinal and the pine tree. But back to stanfod... come on.
