With the exception of Rhode Island, all the English Colonies in America were started by corporations for the purpose of making money. Shortly after it was established, Jamestown, Virginia, established a glass factory. Coal in Pennsylvania encouraged the establishment of foundries. One of the intolerable acts made it illegal for the English colonies to make their own nails. If the foundries in Pennsylvania had not been making nails, the English Parliament never would have passed such a law. There were a number of mill ponds with water wheels running mills to grind corn and wheat. Those ponds could add another wheel for another type of mill. At the end of the Revolutionary War, the United States had quite an industrial base. The cotton gin combined with the automatic spinning machine greatly speeded up the manufacture of clothing. Industrialization greatly increased in the Civil War. The government standardized railroad gage and anything else it could. Those standards remained after the War. Many new factories made new products among which was paper from trees. Newspapers became inexpensive and common. After The Civil War, The Bessemer Converter made the switch to steel possible. The telephone simplified communication. So no one thing started it. Industries grew from the beginning of the first colony.
