It began with a break-in at the Democrat Party Headquarters located in the Watergate Building complex in Washington, hence the name.

With the discovery of a break-in at the (then) Headquarters of the Democrat National Campaign Committee. The burglars were subsequently arrested inside the Campaign Hq by the Washington DC Police, after which the plot began to unravel. See link below:
