California, which makes sense because it is the most populous state. More people, more serial killers. Texas certainly is a worthy contender. But the state of Washington has produced more serial killers per capita than most other states. Washington's population is minuscule compared to California yet it has produced an alarming number of serial killers.

There are differing opinions as to why this is so. Many feel the rainy climate contributes to this phenomena but so far this is just a theory.

It would have to be the state of Washington. The Pacific Northwest seems to be a virtual hotbed of serial murder. True crime writer Ann Rule, also a Washington native, theorised that the Evergreen state has thousands of miles of wilderness that makes body dumps so easy. I think that may be part of the reason but not totally. That area of the country has far less sunshine than most of the continental US. It is a fact that the human brain needs a certain amount of sunlight to be 'healthy and normal'. And not just a lack of sunlight but the almost constant rain can take a toll. So it is probably a combination of things that contribute to the problem.

California comes in at number one, but in a way this makes sense. California is the most populous state in the country so it stands to reason that there will be more of every kind of killer.

What is not so easily understood is Washington state. With a population a fraction of California's, it has much more than it's fair share of serial murder. True crime writer and Washington state long-time resident Ann Rule thinks the opportunity of vast wilderness for dumping sights could be one reason. Montana has more unpopulated wilderness than Washington state yet has very few cases of serial killers makes this theory appear pretty weak. It is possible that the lack of sun and it's effects on the human brain could be in part the reason for the higher percentage of serial murder.

Other states with that rank high for serial murder are Texas and Florida. These two states are also most likely to execute death penaly cases than other states. It seems that southerners still hold with 'an eye for an eye' philosophy.

As of March 2, 2011, according to information from the FBI's Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (VICAP) based on the location of 1,398 known victims of serial killers, which includes serial homicide victims reported to the FBI by local police officials since 1985 but should not be considered a complete count of actual serial killings. Results:The states of Nevada, South Dakota, Vermont and West Virginia all tie with a total of 0 reported serial killings.

The flip side of this is California and New York with 128 and 137 respectively. California is the most populous state and New York has NYC which is a large urban area. But Washington state has the more serial killers per capita than any other state. In other words, for it's sparse population it produces for more of these killers than other state, 95 killers to be exact.

How many active serial killers in Florida?

There is a possible serial killer that has killed one young woman in Florida and one in Georgia. The police were still in the stage of linking the two deaths with criminal MO and signature. Unfortunately, with serial killers, they are caught through repetition and creation of criminal patterns. This means more victims.------ From my knowledge Florida is the state with the most serial killers.

There is at present a suspected serial killer in Florida and possibly Georgia. Details are scetchy due to the need for confidentiality in an open, ongoing investigation. How many serial killers has Louisiana had?

There have been serial killing investigations in Louisiana in the past and some investigations are being started recently. Ronald Joseph Dominique, Sean Vincent Gillis, John Peter Malveaux and Derrick Todd Lee had been arrested in recent years for committing serial murders in the state of Louisiana. They are certainly not responsible for all of the unsolved cases in the state. There are woman found dead and now it looks like someone is killing men in the state of Louisiana. One of the most remarkable US serial killers was Clementine Barnabet (or Bernebet). She was a cult member and used a hatchet. He confession is bone-chilling. Recent non-feminist women's studies scholarship has thrown light on the fact that female serial killers have been mostly ignored by criminologists and historians. The current count (3 or more victims) of cases is over 800, and growing.

Are serial killers an anomaly of industrialized societies?

Serial killers have been around since ancient civilizations and not only in industrialized societies. It is not a society what makes the killer, it is the person's own will or it's demented mental state. When you read about a serial killer, you see some explanation to determine when the person ticked into making those horrendous acts. For example, a break up from the relationship of their parents or the relationship the person had. Most of us have relationship destroyed and never become a serial killer. Industrialized societies are not the motive to a person start killing and industrialized societies had never came with a clue to identify serial killers before they start killing and their real motive.
